BSI Survey: IT Security Essential in Device Purchases

The importance of IT security is becoming increasingly apparent in today’s digitalized world. A recent survey by the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) shows that consumers are increasingly considering security aspects in their purchasing decisions for technical devices. The results reveal that security features have become a crucial criterion for many buyers.

The BSI conducted a comprehensive survey to determine which factors come to the forefront when purchasing smartphones, laptops, and other connected devices. The survey found that more than half of the respondents reported paying attention to the security features of new devices. While price and specifications used to dominate other criteria in the past, awareness of data protection and cybersecurity has noticeably changed.

It is particularly notable that trust in manufacturers plays a central role. Many consumers are aware that the security of their data largely depends on the measures that the manufacturer takes.

The survey found that users are increasingly seeking transparent information about security updates and privacy policies. The desire for regular software updates is a decisive factor in the purchasing decision. Customers have a strong interest in ensuring that the devices they purchase remain safe and secure in the future. Another interesting aspect of the survey is the attitudes of the tested individuals towards smart home devices. More and more consumers are integrating smart technologies into their daily lives, but they also have serious concerns about the security risks that such devices may pose. The survey shows that consumers exercise particular caution before inviting such technologies into their private spaces. Privacy is an important issue for many participants. The majority of respondents believe that manufacturers have a responsibility to ensure that personal data is protected and not misused. This view has strengthened over the past few years, especially after some high-profile data scandals generated media attention. Security features such as encryption and anonymization are therefore increasingly demanded by buyers to ensure a certain level of security and privacy. These trends are also reflected in sales figures.Manufacturers that increasingly focus on IT security and provide transparent information about their security practices are experiencing growth in the market. On the other hand, companies that neglect security aspects or fail to communicate them effectively struggle to gain consumer trust. In summary, IT security has gained importance for the general public when purchasing devices. The results of the BSI survey illustrate that consumers are willing to pay a higher price for security and actively seek information about the security features of their devices. Today's customers are more informed and demand greater transparency and accountability from manufacturers. Author: Anita Faake, Monday, September 9, 2024
